How to Solve dMAT Odd-One-Out Problems

Odd-one-out questions give you a small group of items — figures, numbers, or words — and ask which one does not belong with the rest. They look like they reward a flash of insight, but that is exactly the trap. The candidates who lose time here are the ones waiting for the answer to jump out at them; the ones who stay calm work through the shared features methodically until one item breaks the pattern. This article sets out a simple, repeatable routine so these questions become quick, reliable marks rather than a place where you second-guess yourself.

The rest define the rule, not the exception

The instinct most people have is to hunt for the strange item first. That is backwards. In a well-made odd-one-out question, the majority of items share a single clear property, and the odd one is simply the item that lacks it. So your job is to find what the group has in common, not to spot the oddity by feel.

Start by asking: what do most of these items share? Look at each item as a set of features. For figures, those features are things like the number of elements, their shape, orientation, shading, symmetry, or whether the parts curve or are made of straight lines. For words or numbers, they are properties like size, parity, category, or the operation that generates them. Once you can name the property that four out of five items share, the fifth announces itself. The discipline is to define the rule before you accuse any single item of breaking it.

This is the same mindset used in the wider dMAT Core Module: reduce a visual or numeric puzzle to a short list of testable properties rather than searching for inspiration. When you treat the question as feature-comparison rather than pattern-spotting, the pressure drops and the pace picks up.

Test one property at a time

When the shared rule is not obvious, do not stare at the whole set hoping it resolves. Work through properties one at a time, checking each across every item before moving to the next. A useful order for figures is:

  1. Count — do most items have the same number of elements, sides, or intersections?
  2. Shape and type — are they all curved, all straight-edged, all closed?
  3. Orientation — do they point or rotate the same way?
  4. Shading or fill — is one filled where the others are open, or vice versa?
  5. Symmetry — do most have a line of symmetry that one lacks?

For each property, you are looking for the arrangement where four items agree and one disagrees. The moment a property splits the group four-to-one, you have very likely found the answer. If a property splits it three-to-two, it is not the rule — keep going. This ordered sweep stops you from fixating on the first difference you notice, which is rarely the intended one.

The reason to test properties in a fixed sequence, rather than jumping around, is the same reason a checklist helps with figure sequences: it guarantees you consider the simple explanations before the elaborate ones, and it keeps your search from looping.

Beware the deliberate distractor

Good odd-one-out questions include an item that is different in some irrelevant way — a decoy that looks unusual but does not break the real rule. You might notice that one figure is larger, or one word is longer, and be tempted to pick it. Resist that pull until you have named the property that four items genuinely share. If your "odd" item is odd on a feature that the other four do not actually have in common, you have found a distractor, not the answer.

A quick self-check protects you here: once you think you have the answer, state the rule in a single sentence — "four of these have an even number of sides; this one has an odd number." If you can complete that sentence cleanly, trust it. If the best you can manage is "this one just looks different," you have not finished the analysis yet. This is the same elimination logic that helps when you handle a question you cannot fully solve: confirm a property rather than following a hunch.

Manage the clock and move on

Most odd-one-out items are meant to be quick. If one resists after you have run the property sweep once, mark it, make your best-supported choice and move on rather than letting a single figure drain the time three others needed. Speed here is a by-product of familiarity. The more sets you compare calmly, the faster the common structures — count, shape, orientation, shading, symmetry — start to surface on their own.

Keep the purpose in view

You are not memorising tricks; you are training an ordered way of comparing items: find what the group shares, test one property at a time, discount the decoys, and confirm the rule in a sentence before you commit.
