How to Use Estimation on the dMAT

Estimation is one of the most underused skills in dMAT preparation. Faced with a quantitative question, most candidates reach straight for exact arithmetic — and then lose time on calculations that were never necessary. A quick, deliberate estimate does two things: it often narrows the answer choices before you commit to a full solution, and it gives you a sanity check when you do calculate, so an obvious slip does not become a wrong answer.

The point is not to guess loosely. It is to round sensibly, reason about the size of the result, and use that judgement to work faster and more accurately.

Round before you calculate

The foundation of estimation is confident rounding. Before you touch the exact figures, replace each number with a nearby round one and see where the answer lands.

If a question multiplies 312 by 48, treat it as roughly 300 times 50 — about 15,000. That single step tells you the answer sits in the tens of thousands, not the hundreds or the millions. When the answer choices are spread across different orders of magnitude, this alone can point to the correct option without any precise work.

Rounding also protects you from careless errors. If your exact calculation produces a number far from your estimate, you have caught a mistake before it costs you a mark. Decide when an estimate is enough

Not every question needs a full solution, and part of the skill is recognising which is which. Look at the answer choices first.

When the options are far apart, an estimate frequently settles the question outright — you do not need the exact value, only the right neighbourhood. When the options are close together, estimation narrows the field but you will need to finish the calculation to separate the final candidates. Reading the choices before you compute tells you how much precision the question actually demands.

Estimate with fractions and percentages

Many quantitative items involve proportions, and here estimation is especially powerful. Anchor your work to a few reference points you already know well.

A useful set to have automatic is that one-half is 50 per cent, one-quarter is 25 per cent, one-fifth is 20 per cent and one-tenth is 10 per cent. To find 19 per cent of a number, take a fifth and trim it slightly. To find 48 per cent, halve the number and adjust down a touch. These moves are faster than long multiplication and accurate enough to choose between spread-out options.

The same applies to fractions that look awkward. A fraction such as 7/15 is a little under a half; 5/8 is a little over a half. Knowing whether a value sits above or below a familiar landmark is often all a question asks of you.

Use estimation to check exact work

Even when a question demands a precise answer, an estimate remains valuable as a final check. Once you have calculated, ask whether the result is the size you expected.

If you divided and got a number larger than what you started with, something has gone wrong. If a percentage of a quantity came out bigger than the quantity itself, you have misplaced a step. These are exactly the small structural errors that a rough estimate exposes instantly. Practise estimation as its own skill

Estimation feels natural only after deliberate practice, so give it dedicated attention rather than hoping it appears under pressure. A short, repeatable routine works well:

  1. Take a set of quantitative questions and, for each, write only an estimate and the answer choice it points to — no full working.
  2. Then solve the same questions exactly and compare. Note where your estimate was decisive and where it was too rough to choose.
  3. Over a week, watch for the question types where estimation reliably wins, and lean on it there first.

The aim is calibration: knowing when a rounded answer is trustworthy and when you must compute in full. That judgement comes only from doing both side by side and comparing the outcomes.

Estimation is not a shortcut you take when you are unsure. It is a deliberate first move that tells you the size of the answer, narrows the choices, and guards your exact work against slips. Used well, it turns questions you feared into quick decisions and frees time for the ones that genuinely need it.
