Most people improve quickly when they begin preparing for the dMAT, then reach a point where the numbers stop moving. You keep practising, you keep putting in the hours, but your scores settle into a narrow band and refuse to climb. This is a plateau, and it is one of the most discouraging stages of preparation because effort no longer seems to translate into progress. The good news is that a plateau is almost always a signal, not a ceiling. It usually means the way you are practising has stopped matching what you now need. This article explains how to diagnose why your scores have stalled and how to change your practice so it starts producing results again.

Why plateaus happen
Early progress is easy because the first improvements are the cheapest. You learn the format, you stop making obvious errors, and you pick up a few reliable methods. Those gains come fast and feel motivating. A plateau arrives when you have collected the easy wins and the remaining gap is made of smaller, more specific weaknesses that repeated general practice does not touch.
The most common cause is practising on autopilot. Doing set after set feels productive, but if you are mostly reinforcing what you already do well, your score cannot move. The questions you get right teach you very little; the ones you get wrong — or get right slowly, or by guessing — are where the remaining points live. When practice volume goes up but review stays shallow, you plateau.
A second cause is a hidden constraint that caps your score regardless of accuracy. Pacing is the usual culprit: if you consistently run out of time, working on harder questions will not help, because you never reach some of the easier ones. A plateau driven by pacing looks like an accuracy problem but is really a time-management problem, and it needs a different fix.
Diagnose before you change anything
Resist the urge to simply do more. The first step out of a plateau is an honest diagnosis of where your points are actually being lost, and the best source for that is your own record of mistakes rather than a general feeling that you are "bad at" a section.
If you are keeping an error log, read back over the last few weeks and sort your misses into a small number of buckets:
- Method gaps — question types where you do not have a reliable approach and are effectively improvising each time.
- Careless errors — questions you understood but got wrong through misreading, a slip, or rushing.
- Pacing losses — questions left blank or rushed at the end because time ran out.
- True unknowns — questions where the underlying idea genuinely was not there.
The proportions matter more than the total. A plateau caused mostly by pacing needs practice under tighter timing and better triage of hard questions; a plateau caused by method gaps needs focused work on one or two specific question types; a plateau caused by careless errors needs a checking routine, not new content. Reviewing your mock tests properly — reconstructing why each wrong answer happened rather than just noting the correct option — is what turns a vague sense of being stuck into a short, actionable list.
Change the practice, not just the volume
Once you know which bucket dominates, target it deliberately instead of doing more mixed sets. If method gaps lead, spend a week on concentrated practice of the one or two question types that lose you the most points, working slowly enough to build a repeatable approach before adding time pressure back. If careless errors lead, add a brief verification step to each answer and practise the discipline of handling questions you cannot immediately solve — flagging and moving on rather than sinking time and attention.
Depth of review is what usually needs to change most. For every question you get wrong, write one or two sentences explaining the specific reason and the correct method, then find a fresh question that tests the same weakness and solve it. This is slower than grinding through new sets, but it is the mechanism by which practice actually changes what you can do, and it pairs naturally with spacing your reviews so that corrections stick — the same logic behind active recall and spaced repetition.
It also helps to check the conditions you practise under. Scores measured in relaxed, untimed sessions can hide a pacing plateau entirely. Running an occasional full simulation under real conditions gives you a truer number and often reveals that the plateau is not in your knowledge at all but in how you allocate time across a complete paper.
Keep perspective while you climb
Progress after a plateau tends to be quieter than the early jump. You may fix a recurring method error and see your score move by a small margin rather than a dramatic one, and several of those small margins are what a breakthrough actually looks like from the inside. Judge your progress by whether specific, named weaknesses are disappearing from your error log, not by whether every practice score rises. If you have diagnosed honestly, targeted the dominant weakness, and deepened your review, the numbers will follow — usually a little later than you would like.
A plateau is uncomfortable, but it is also information: it tells you that general effort has done its job and the next gains require precision.
